Advanced Smile Institute can provide a dental bridge procedure to help restore a smile. One major part of our dental care is tooth restoration. When teeth have endured stress, trauma, or have become decayed, extraction or removal is necessary. In these situations, Advanced Smile offers several options to restore the smile, jaw, and mouth in general. Getting a dental bridge is a common procedure and can be a successful option for certain dental restoration cases.
Similar to a crown, a dental bridge is used to fill in missing teeth for both cosmetic and structural purposes. Unlike crowns, bridges are used when a tooth, or more often, multiple teeth are missing and need to be replaced. Restorative dentistry is important for not only aesthetic purposes but also for keeping the jaw in place and therefore maintaining the way one speaks, eats, and even breathes. In addition, when teeth are lost due to decay, not acting on restoration can lead to more decay and more tooth loss.
The conventional fixed bridge is the most commonly provided dental bridge. It is a replacement tooth bonded between two crowns, successfully filling a gap. We prefer this type of dental bridge if a dental implant is not possible.
A resin-bonded bridge, also known as a “Maryland Bridge,” is used when a front tooth is missing, most often knocked out, and the other teeth are healthy without having needed restorations. These are joined with metal bands and bonded to the surrounding teeth with resin cement. At Advanced Smile Institute, we do not recommend this type of dental bridge because it has a higher failure rate.A cantilever bridge is a replacement tooth bonded with a crown, and is typically recommended for replacing teeth that may not be used for chewing as often. This is because the cantilever bridge is not typically as strong as the conventional fixed bridge. At Advanced Smile Institute, we do not recommend this type of dental bridge because it places undue stress on the anchor teeth.
Similar to the process with inserting dental crowns, the procedure of inserting dental bridges first requires an impression be made of the teeth, mouth, and jaw. A temporary bridge is made and inserted at the time of the preparation procedure to keep the mouth and jaw from any unwanted adjustments and for comfort. At the procedural appointment, the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent bridge is inserted in one visit.
